This seems to be the attitude most people have towards fate and other forms of predestination, at least most people I've met. They believe that they can decide what to do and that nothing decides for them, but still use phrases like "I had to" or "I couldn't stop myself" when describing certain decisions. Those decisions often seem to be bad or at least frivolous ones. Fate intervenes when it's a convenient excuse, I guess.
