Of course, it can be both, and a bluebird would probably pronounce it differently than a cardinal would, so it's really a useless question anyway. Still, I haven't decided how I pronounce it myself. I mean, I think it's somehow somewhere in between. Most of the time I pronounce it with one syllable, but other times, to add emphasis, I might pronounce it with two. It's weird.
