Now, I haven’t read anywhere that this song has anything to do with birds, but most of the stuff you read about the origins of old songs and nursery rhymes are folk origins anyway. I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be about birds. If it is, though, it’s definitely sad, and we should put it to a different tune that would convey that better.

And birds have every right to be upset about it.
