The ending “ough” has at least four different pronunciations in the English language. Is there any construction that has more? Why can’t we just stick with one? Better yet, let’s just get rid of it altogether. There are better, easier ways of spelling those sounds. Then again, if we did that Lewis’ poem would never work.
