Planning ahead is something that, for a long time, was seen as an inherently human trait. Catching food when they aren't hungry and saving it for later has been observed in ravens and crows for a while. Only more recently, however, has it been shown that ravens can plan for the future in much more complex ways, such as knowing which tool they will later need to accomplish an anticipated task. It's amazing.
